The volume aims to explore the impact of EU Regulation No. 650/2012 on international successions within the legal systems of the Member States, adopting not only a private international law perspective but also one focused on substantive private law. The analysis is grounded in the belief that national succession law regimes are by no means impermeable to the recent European legislation, which, especially in light of the interpretations provided by the Court of Justice, is capable of influencing substantive rules, albeit indirectly. With this in mind, the volume examines crucial issues of succession law, such as forced heirship, the prohibition of succession agreements, the mechanisms for transferring the estate, the publicity of acquisitions mortis causa, and proof of heirship. It also addresses key aspects of the new European framework on international successions, including the notion of the deceased's habitual residence, the public policy exception, the European Certificate of Succession, the "renvoi" rule, and the safeguarding of bilateral Conventions.
