One of the most interesting aspects of this guide are the examples of mainstream thinking of those historians and archaeologists who have long studied this lateantique residence, one of the best-known sites in the Mediterranean basin. Both the general part and the descriptions of its rooms feature the various and occasionally conflicting hypotheses proposed by Gentili or Carandini, Settis or Pensabene, to cite only the most important exponents of academia. Some questions regarding the villa still remain unresolved. Who was the mysterious dominus who lived here? And what were the role and function of this major complex? Surrounded by an extensive latifundium in the centre of Sicily, it lay in a key position along the strategic communication route between Africa and the city of Rome, which crossed the island between Agrigento and Catania.
