In this Florilegium, Clark proposes, suggests, and often remembers: the garden, the curious world of botany, becomes, precisely because of the simplicity of the tale, within everyone's reach. On Clark's part, nothing goes unnoticed; his memories and observations become, through these tales, a common and widespread heritage of knowledge and experience. His own personal stories are charged with mirth and, in some cases, even biting humor. They are the means to arrive in the simplest and most sober way into the very rich world of roots, leaves, petals; botany in short, with careful and correct observation worthy of the most historical and lively Anglo-Saxon empiricism... Treated in this way, the garden becomes a great game, full of imagination, levity and, as rightly may be the case, proposals: the ways to arrive at good gardening are many and pass through several roads. Clark knows them, has studied them, has had a lot of fun with them, and cheerfully proposes them. The dear old doubts about "what to do" are there, as well, and are honestly remembered....
