In the analyses of the many cities we have been presenting for several years in our On the Road series, we could hardly abstain from exploring Paris, a city where the ancient and contemporary has managed to coexist, and where, unlike many other European capitals, contemporary architecture has been granted considerable room for expression. In this book, we decided to limit the selection exclusively to contemporary projects mainly built over the part thirty years, with a few exceptions of highly representational projects that have become attractions for millions of tourists, like the Louvre Pyramid by leoh Ming Pei and the Centre Pompidou by the Piano-Rogers-Franchini team, as well as some of the most iconic examples of Modernism, which found its origins in France thanks to the practical and intellectual efforts of that generation of architects who, in the years before and after both world wars, launched a new interpretation of architectural criteria. For this reason, in the general narrative we included the Swiss Pavilion by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, the Maison du Brésil by Le Corbusier and Lłcio Costa, and Tristan Tzara's house, by Adolf Loos, because they play an introductory role in understanding the architectural evolution of the city. In summer 2024, Paris will be the setting for a great event: the 33rd Olympic Games; and for this reason, in this guide, we have selected some of the projects that will be completed in conjunction with the sporting event. We wanted to understand how the public administration had resolved the issues involving the arrival of a vast number of people - estimated numbers are about 15 million visitors - without undermining the normal functioning of the city. In the case of the London Olympics in 2012, we were able to see how these large events are able to generate interesting urban redevelopment schemes and increase the infrastructural capacity of the city. One example in this guide is the Saint-Denis Pleyel railway Station designed by Kengo Kuma, which is part of the far greater Grand Paris Express rail system. Six routes will guide visitors on a circuit that travels from the centre out towards the suburbs, as far as the southern Saclay area, the hub of the vast university campus and research centre, including projects designed by RPBW, OMA, Grafton Architects, LAN and BRUTHER, among others. We are delighted to present the reader with this tool for analysing such a complex city, composed of so many different and often contrasting realities, but which has managed to create a harmonious fusion despite the problems typical of a European metropolis. We hope that the selection we have chosen will help you in discovering this wonderful city. Bon voyage!
