«This book by photographer and poet Nat Herz gives a true and powerful description of the great March on Washington on August 28, 1963 for jobs and freedom. I am a witness. I was there. Reading this book, I feel once again the emotions experienced in Washington D.C. on that day... a young 15 years old: Charleston, South Carolina "born and bred", excited in every way. I am transported back to the day of that long walk, shouting and singing along with thousands of my elders, down Constitution Avenue to the Lincoln Memorial. Because my best friend Delores and I took a Greyhound from Philly, "without parental consent" to be part of this historical event, we expected to be punished upon our return home... and we "got it". To this day I still say it was worth it. There we listened to speeches given by the great leaders of the day: A. Philip Randolph, Martin Luther King, James Farmer and others. That day strengthened and inspired me in my own work to organize labor and fight for social and economic justice for the disadvantaged. That day inspired others to pursue a higher calling than themselves.» (from Introduction by Clayola Bro)
