We present some lesser known events that had as protagonists on the one part American and British aviators and on the other Italian partisans and civilians active in different areas of the country: Lazio, Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, and Piedmont. It was to be for the most part peasants, humble and simple people who were to risk their lives and belongings to hide and help these foreign soldiers. The soldiers, who literally "rained down from heaven", spoke incomprehensible foreign languages. They knocked on the doors of the humble folk leaving them with a difficult choice to make: report the presence of the aviators to the German and Fascist military authorities, facilitating their capture and perhaps pocketing a lavish fee, or risk the lives of their families in the endeavour to help these strangers in some way. In most cases, the civilians opted for the latter and these pages are also dedicated to them, in remembrance of their sacrifices and their sufferings.
